In September of 1944, Bielefeld endured an air strike that killed more than six hundred people and destroyed large sections of the city. It was not until 1945 that American troops entered the city and handed the transitional peace to the British military.

Today, Bielefeld Germany is home to successful business and industry with textile and clothing manufacturers and large sectors of industry in construction and mechanical engineering. Most local Bielefeld residents work in service industries and many others work in manufacturing jobs.
